Dear Holocaust Survivor

This letter has been weighing on my heart for quite some time. I’m amazed I didn’t write it years ago. I suppose time has given me a clearer sense of all I have… Read More

Scars

I have a new scar. A new, physical scar. I’ve got four now, from four different surgeries but most people will ever only see one: the newest one. They’ll see it because it’s… Read More

Heroes: An Excerpt

Girls are stupid. Mary Beth can’t even lay down without crying. And she has to have the light on too. She thinks there are monsters in the dark. One time, she ran into… Read More

VBS: Not Just For Kids

A little girl rocked my world today. This week, I am one of literally dozens of volunteers for my home church’s Vacation Bible School. Before I go further, let me just say how… Read More

Start with a Puzzle

I finished a puzzle tonight. Granted, it’s a child’s puzzle but it DOES have 100 pieces. I promised my daughter that I’d finish it before she wakes in the morning. She really does… Read More

Seeing the Sunrise

I see a surgeon on Monday. That’s in 2 days. I noticed yesterday the swell in my chest, that bubble of fear that often gets stuck in my throat. I noticed it but… Read More

  • Stories That Matter

Stores that matter are stories that make me feel, invigorate me or serve as a call to action for me. Stories that matter are stories that awaken my spirit to issues, be they spiritual, emotional, moral, social or a combination. Stories that matter are stories that call all my emotions into play: sadness, anger, grief, happiness, despair, joy, etc. Stories that make me think. Stories that provide me with indulgences, like romance, but that, at their core, have something important to say. Some stories are written with the intent of providing the reader with an escape from real life; stories that matter, however, are written to make readers --more aware-- of reality; to provoke compassion and empathy, love and hate, anger and grief. Stories that matter are the occurrences, catastrophes, triumphs, frustrations and joys of every day life: welcome to my collection of thoughts, feelings, idiosyncrasies, hopes and dreams---collectively known as Stories that Matter.
